That’s right! Its a Valentine’s day post!
Alright, trolling through my music library has made it clear to me that staying on a musical theme is impossible today. Instead, you’ll be treated to three completely unique love songs. I hope it doesn’t confuse things for you tonight.
Remember, I love you no matter what. Even if you’re old and smelly… Off we go!
Pink Floyd – Bike[play] [buy]
I think Syd Barret was already clearly nuts when Pink Floyd came out with their first album, and I think this song, along with Gnome, shows that. Not that its not wonderful, I’ve certainly used lines from this song to woo my lovers. “Have a couple if you wish, they’re on the dish.”
One other thing that stands out here is the band itself, syncopation almost like a marching band, strange wind-up toy sounds, bikes, and other oddities. Its Pink Floyd at its youngest and it makes me smile.
Espers – Black Is The Color[play] [buy]
Its funny how songs like this one sneak into your consciousness. I think I first heard this on a news radio station, late one night when they were bored and decided to broadcast an Irish singer’s concert. He captured the male romance of this song so well that it made me drive home early just to sing it to my wife.
The song was made somewhat famous by Nina Simone, which was awesome to find out, but it dates back to 18th century Ireland. I’m Irish, so its an appropriate song for me to love. I share the version that Espers has done because I really like the harmonies that Greg Weeks sings. The song is very, very personal and old, and wise. Please enjoy it with your true love, black haired or otherwise.
Talking Heads – Genius Of Love[play] [buy]
Oh my, so silly. I’m pretty sure that the Tom Tom Club was completely artificially created to mock the pop scene of their time, but then again, they seem to have such fun playing the music… I’m not sure, but either way, I sort of wish I was the Genius of Love. Its like the Wizard of Oz for Valentine’s Day Land. Emerald slippers and the Ruby City. Take that idea to the bank and deposit it safely.
Bonus Songs!!!
Sparks – Falling In Love With Myself Again
Radiohead – True Love Waits
The Magnetic Fields – The Book of Love
