We are turning this blog into a one-song-per-post blog. I realize this doesn’t matter to you, but I had to let myself know about it. Olright then, on to the song.

Originally I wanted to let Jon Perry post about this song, but he’s rather busy these days, and I thought it best not to bother him. But it is only here because he brought it to my attention.
Man Man is a band with a tattered soul similar to The Denver Gentlemen, Modest Mouse, and Tom Waits. But they are still rather fresh. This song starts out sounding pretty damn evil, and I love it when songs do that. Part of this band’s charm is their inconsistent, off-time, out of tune playing. I know that a lot of bands play that way, but I think these guys could play it straight if they wanted to. They’re achieving something by playing this way, and I’m not sure what it is.
But the contrast between the start of the song and point at which the jazzy clarinet/sax starts playing is perfect. Its the difference between some angry birdmen and a man in clean leather trenchcoat. Its the difference between the tribal chant of “Moustache”, and the completely-out-of-the-blue-amazing keyboard/rainbow/noise that comes just after it.
The best part about songs like this is the parts in them that only come once. If you want to hear that rainbow sound a third time, you’ll have to play the song again. What a treat.
